What is a cleansing balm?
You might be wondering what the heck is an organic cleansing balm? Well, it’s actually an oil-based product that is generally solid at room temperature that you can use as part of your skincare routine as a makeup remover and also as a facial cleanser. If you’ve ever heard of the double cleansing method, a cleansing balm is perfect. It’s basically when you use the oil to first remove your makeup then follow up with your favorite toxin-free facial cleanser. Benefits of a Cleansing Balm
Cleansing balms can reduce the amount of oil on your face since they contain oil and will bind to oil on your skin. It will also bind dirt and impurities from your pores and moisturize and soften your skin at the same time. So it’s basically an all-in-one product!
I used to use makeup removing cloths, and I felt like I was constantly tugging on my face, and as you get older, you definitely don’t want to be pulling on your skin. The last thing you want to do is to lose elasticity. The good news is a cleansing balm also helps to reduce the impurities in your skin, including pollutants and contaminants from the environment and from the air. What it does is actually bind & remove those contaminants and prevent them from forming free radicals on your skin, which actually cause DNA damage and aging. A cleansing balm is a really great product that you can use as part of your low-tox, organic lifestyle and skincare routine – an absolute must-have!
What’s usually in an organic cleansing balm and how much do they cost?
A cleansing balm is typically a blend of oils with some wax to help it stay solid at room temperature and some essential oils for the aroma therapy and also therapeutic benefits that essential oils have for the skin.
The typical cleansing balm can cost anywhere from $30 to $40 for an organic version. Believe it or not, finding an organic cleansing balm that does not contain isolated fragrance chemicals is quite challenging!
Why should you use an organic cleansing balm in particular?
The issue of pesticides. Pesticides are generally fat soluble or lipophilic, and they’re designed to be this way so that when they’re applied to the plants and crops, they don’t get washed off by the rain or when the crops get watered.
When oils are extracted from these plants, then the pesticides come along with them. Oftentimes pesticides can become concentrated in oils. So that’s why it’s super important to use pure oils, especially essential oils for that reason.
Another thing is that when something is fat-soluble or lipophillic, then it will have a higher rate of absorption through your skin, into your bloodstream. So if you can avoid adding additional pesticides to your daily routine, by using an organic cleansing balm, then that is the way to go.
Not to mention cleansing balms are not meant to be left on the skin necessarily, but you can, if you are looking for something that has a lot of moisture or if you are having really dry or flaky skin, then leaving it on is totally fine. If it’s organic, and you don’t have to worry about the extra load of pesticides. Sounds like a win-win situation, right?
Another reason that you want to use an organic cleansing balm is the issue of consumer safety and toxicity, and also toxicity to the occupational workers who might have to apply toxic herbicides like glyphosate in the fields. This stuff removes waterproof makeup extremely easily and doesn’t require tugging, pulling, or rubbing of the skin, which is amazing. It’s on the pricier end of the organic cleansing balm spectrum at $13 per ounce, but well worth it for the high-quality, luxurious ingredients if you ask me. It’s available in their stores or online. In 2nd place is Dr. Bronner’s Organic Magic Balm (Baby Unscented). This one is much more affordable at $5 per ounce, comes in a zero-waste aluminum tin, and is readily available at most major retailers and health food stores. It works reasonably well to remove my everyday staple Pure Haven waterproof gel eyeliner, but is definitely more solid at room temperature likely because it contains more wax. Therefore, it took a little more effort to remove my makeup, but given the affordable price and multitude of other uses for dry skin pretty much anywhere on your body and your kids’, this one definitely gets my approval.
How to Use an Organic Cleansing Balm to Remove Waterproof Makeup
I love to use the double cleansing method to get all the makeup off at night. I used to swear by makeup wipes until I realized that they’re non-biodegradable and essentially made of plastic. Not to mention, the ingredients in most makeup removing wipes are insufficient to truly remove makeup. Just ask any makeup artist.
How to double cleanse:
- Take a bit of the cleansing balm and melt it in palms for a few seconds before gently rubbing it all over face, focusing it on eyes.
- Wipe away the melted mascara and eyeliner
- Heat a small wash cloth in some hot running water then ring out.
- Place towel over your face until it cools.
- Gently wipe away makeup.
- Repeat.
- Follow with your favorite facial cleanser and products.
